I believe that by just being a part of “Priscilla’ Palmer’s Personal Development list obligates each of us to also post this list. You like me (Killeris at “Attitude, the Ultimate Power”) are on this list. If you have already posted it, THANK YOU. If you have not posted it, I am officially putting out a challenge that you add additional sites that fit the theme and post it. This list can be found at: http://mondaymorningpower.blogspot.com/2007/09/personal-development-list-challenge.html.

Hi Carlon,
After Priscilla Palmer's self development list Jenny and I have decided to try to help build the self development community. So we are holding a little contest.
Leaders need followers and vice versa. It's a closed system and to focus on one element to the exclusion of the other makes no sense. So I am glad you give credit to the phenomena of followership.

In most hierarchical organizations you're dependent on the top to get it right, so you want the "leaders" to be in control, to know what they are doing, to be good people. Perhaps it is here that the seeds of failure start. We need heroes in this system and we have humans.

I've "been around" as they say and the same issues exist today as they did 30 years ago. I believe we need a new level of thinking, another language and new ways of organizing to get past the recurring problems with leadership

Carlon

This is a great post! For someone who claims to be "Not a Leadership Guy", you have some well-thought opinions.

Actually, I believe since most of us find ourselves in follower-leader relationships for most of our professional lives, most of us are in fact leadership guys or gals of one sort of another. Not that we’re all leaders, I think that is either a naive or a self-serving perspective. Rather, we all have a sense of the qualities of the leaders we work with, maybe not in an empirical, measurable way, but in a relative, “Goldilocks” way.

One last thing... I believe you are spot on target about followership. Like listening, followership is more-often-than-not a neglected skill. If you are looking for a good followership text, I recommend, “A Message to Garcia” by Elbert Hubbard. I cannot recommend this essay more highly.

Again, thank you for accepting the challenge and keep you eye out for the Challenge List. I look forward to more great conversation with you.

Take care...
