Do What You Love & The Money Will Follow
Do what you love and the money will follow. Heard that before? It sounds like an old tired cliché. I wouldn’t blame you for rolling your eyes or being cynical when you hear it. Personally, I hate those kinds of sayings. The reason is that although it’s easy to say “do what you love and the money will follow” it’s another thing altogether to actually do it.
I should know. When I went to college, I took the route of money. I majored in something that I thought would bring me money hand over fist. Yes, I majored in…
…philosophy.
What can I say? I love philosophy. Did I make a lot of money from it? Actually, I didn’t do so poorly. The reason is that philosophy gave me the critical thinking skills to solve problems. It taught me how to think and how to express those thoughts in a clear and coherent manner.
Also, it gave me the basic foundation for doing what I do now. And what I do now is what I love. It excites me. And I am passionate about it.
And that is writing. The truth is I love writing. I love it more than anything else in the world. I like putting words down. I like people reading it. And I like inspiring people.
Currently, I am working for a publishing company in
And best of all, I write this blog. I spend a lot of time on it. But it doesn’t feel like work. And that’s when you know you’re doing something you love. You’d do it for free.
What do you love? Or better yet, what excites you? What is the one thing that makes you get up in the morning? And if you’re not doing that thing, you should be planning on how to be doing it. If you lack the passion for what you do, you will find it increasingly difficult to motivate yourself, which could lead to a whole range of other problems, especially financial problems because many people try to “buy happiness” yet find themselves feeling both empty and broke.
Identifying that one thing will be a major step in your personal growth, reduce much of the stress in your life, and allow a good portion of your life to fall right into place.

“Do what you love and the money and fame will follow you.” That’s what Maria Callas said as well at the last day of her Master Class in Juliard some time in 1970’s. However, ironically, she died alone and lonely in France with all that money and fame. Do what we love is surely an important thing in our life, but I guess to know what to do with that wealth and fame you acquired is important as well.
All the best,

I sent your post to my son, who is an executive with Blue Cross now.
He also majored in Philosophy and his father had a fit about it! He wanted him to be a business major. (He graduated Cum Laude)
But my son said it was probably the only time in his life where he could study something that would support him for his whole life.
His employers along the way were never deterred by his major. They seemed to love it.
Connie,
Good for your son. I have had the same experience. My employers never said anything about my major, and I did manage to run a business with my philosophy degree. I currently live in South Korea and I found that studying Confucianism in college gave me a ton of practical knowledge that helped me to have almost zero culture shock.

You really hit on the purpose of this blog. Many times people are so hell-bent on getting fortune and fame that they rarely reflect on WHY they want it. And once they get it, they find themselves just as miserable as they were BEFORE they had wealth and fame.
