OK, Carlon. You’re going to Osaka tomorrow,” Mr. Oh said. Time for me to head to Japan to renew my South Korean visa. Yeah…I have to leave the country every so often to re-new my work visa that expires every year.
But hey…I get a 2-day trip out of it. So, why not?
But Japan. What do I really know about Japan other than what I learned in “Zen Buddhism and Japanese Culture” class I took in college? Well, I planned to make the most out of it. Lack of language be damned!
As you may have read, I have a much different travel philosophy than others. So, if you expect to hear about famous sites in Osaka, you probably won’t enjoy my story. But if you enjoy about a good adventure story about a guy who manages to find what he is looking for in a foreign country despite the fact he has no idea where he is, then sit back and enjoy…

Emerson said his famous essay Self-Reliance, “Traveling is a fool’s paradise.” Well, with all due respect to Ralph Waldo, he needed to get out more. In order to develop, it is essential to be exposed to different ideas, different cultures, and different languages.
But more than that, traveling gives us the chance to develop our “adventure mindset.” You read that right—adventure mindset. Many times our lives appear to be dull and ordinary, and then we take a trip or a vacation to “recharge.” But do you really recharge or do you go back to your same old dull and boring life with barely a story to tell except you saw something that no one really cares about? And that feeling can leave you empty whereas you thought it would make you whole.
But when you travel to have adventure, it’s an entirely different story. It gives you a chance to be different. You call up faculties and skills you never thought you had. I mean try going somewhere where you don’t speak a word of the language, have no idea of kind of food they eat and I guarantee you that you will find within you a reservoir of untapped abilities ready to blow forth.
I just got back from a 2-day trip to Osaka, Japan (I will detail the account in another blog post), and I and a great time. But the truth is I don’t travel like other people. I seek fun and adventure. And you can too.
Though I recommend living in a country for at least 3 months rather than touring, here are some ways you can turn a vacation into an experience to take with you the rest of your life:
